Just in time for the weekend comes a good bit of acid and hardware-based techno from M>O>S Recordings label boss Aroy Dee for the most recent podcast from distributor zero”. Lots of cuts in here from recent releases off Delsin, Present Recordings, Clone, Rushhour, and of course, Dee’s own M>O>S. Win for your ears.
Fact Mix 227 | oOoOO
The elusive oOoOO, whose trademarked witch house sound has found tremendous favor in the last year and a half, steps out just a little further from behind the curtain to provide a mix for Fact Magazine. As expected, the playlist reads like the weekly picks from San Francisco’s own Aquarius Records (he is from the City, after all), swinging widely from the lilting Finnish-language neu-folk Islaja’s “Uni pöllönä olemisesta” to the juke-paced slow jam of DJ Roc’s “I Can’t Control the Feeling” and back again to Cat Power’s heart-wrenching “Evolution”. Makes me fondly remember my days in the heart of the Mission District.
Edit: By the way, the whole middle of this mix is made of bubble gum, so don’t hesitate to page forward to the better selections.

As I find myself lamenting the dearth of stand-out music for the week, I’m reminded of things yet to come with this mix from Levon Vincent, showcasing the phenomenal roster of upcoming releases to be issued on his Novel Sound imprint. Packed to the brim with dubbed-out beats and warm synthscapes, this one says all futures are set to awesome. Now I just can’t wait to get my clutches on some of these tunes.
Big Up Podcast 38 | Comma
Seeing an artist who has put years of hard work into his craft receive recognition is truly a satisfying thing to behold. Such is the case with San Francisco’s own Comma, who is featured in the latest podcast for Big Up Magazine. Having made more than his fair share of waves in the past year following the release of his Carry the Fire EP (Semisexual), as well as his work with Frite Nite and Surefire, he gives us yet another reminder to keep watching this space for big sounds. Walking the line between bassy bangers and lo-fi slow jams the whole way through, this one makes a satisfying head nodder—add sunny drive for ultra effect.
Comma’s second EP, Colortronics, is tentatively slated for release on March 15, on Frite Nite.
Seeing Isolée is what I wish I could be spending my evening hearing live (with 360° sound!) tomorrow night. At least there’s this as a consolation, as well as his contribution to a set with DJ Koze for the most recent edition of WYNU’s Beats In Space.
In the meantime, it’s really deeply satisfying to be doing my listening homework on an upcoming show and find quite the lovely counterexample for my four-to-the-floor detractors. That is to say, you can’t say techno is boring when it sounds like this—and totally screws with the standard formula to such amazing ends.
In any case, if you like the dub (or dubstep) but traditionally can’t hang with techno, this is definitely a good place to start. And hell, if that whets your whistle enough that you want more, I highly recommend taking a look at what the folks with Basic Channel have to offer.
Soul Clap and Tim Sweeney for Beats in Space
Oh funky funky house—you always seem to lead back to all things lovely and oldskool and … then I’m reminded that the post-italo disco days of 80’s and 90’s weren’t so bad after all. When you return to my ears in such fondly-remembered and remixed form, history repeating itself starts to look pretty good.
But seriously. Dig this two-part mix from Soul Clap and Tim Sweeney for Beats in Space, and prepare yourself for some travelling back in time—bedroom danceparty style.
