Gaiser | ‘Some Slip’

MINUS112 - “Some Slip” by Gaiser from Minus / Plus 8 on Vimeo.

The latest release from Gaiser looks to be one hell of a banger, if the previews are anything to go on. Both he and Richie Hawtin have been giving the A-side, “Some Slip” quite a lot of play lately, and it’s hard not to hear why. Below is a recording of Richie playing it at Germany’s edition of the Time Warp festival earlier this year (nevermind the nonsensical still, there), where he summarily wipes the floor with this one.

Physical copies of Some Slip are (supposedly) out now, with digital copies available August 10.

Edit: Now you can hear an official version of the whole A-side!

Donnacha Costello’s Entire ‘Colorseries’ Available in FLAC Format!

For those of us who came to minimal techno somewhat late in the game, the 2007 compiled release of Donnacha Costello’s acclaimed Colorseries on his now-defunct Minimise imprint was bittersweet at best. Though the compilation itself was comprised of ostensibly the best cuts overall, it was hard not to feel that the release itself was lacking—as it in fact was, by design. What was a collection of ten 12” records—each with two tracks expanding on a particular theme—was whittled down to a mere ten cuts in total, some of which weren’t on the original releases (yay!) and some of which were edited down (boo). Not that there’s anything wrong with that; as an overall release, it’s nothing short of stellar top down, but for those of us eager to get our hands on the original set of now nearly impossible-to-find discs, well, the loss was palpable.

And so we land today with some brilliant news: for the first time in more than six years, the entire series is now available, and in FLAC format, no less. Donnacha has teamed up with brand new digital release distributor Flacbox on this one, and you can grab your copy of the entire Colorseries for €9.99 here.

Finally, to give you an idea about what was missed in the compiled version, below is the A side to the Opal disc, for your listening pleasure:

As You Like It Meets Leftroom | March 19, 2011

I remember 2005 being a big year for the reemergence of techno. Ellen Allien blew everyone’s minds with Thrills, Donnacha Costello released the final 12” of his revered Colorseries, Matthew Dear became Audion, and, at the very end of the year, Leftroom Records made its first appearance with a sleeper release titled The Extended Family EP. Digging through my crates now, I realize just how critical this EP really was—it signaled the grand entrance of minimal, legitimized further by the presence of Ali Kahn’s “Water Bomb” on Audion’s Mix for Fabric that came out in the very beginning of 2006.

Now here we are just over five years later, and Leftroom is still at the helm of the growing swell of new techno, house, minimal, and tech house. This June, label head Matt Tolfrey is set to release a compilation featuring his catalog’s cream of the crop (and a few new treats), and in the meantime, he’s making limited stops around the world to share the love, including two in the States. San Francisco has the good fortune of being his sole West Coast stop, where he will be playing for As You Like It Meets Leftroom on Saturday, March 19.

If you’ve never had the opportunity to see  As You Like It in action, this event is going to be one hell of a treat, featuring support from residents Mossmoss, and Rich Korach, as well as Forward SF’s Adnan Sharif and Leftroom’s SF local, Kevin Knapp. The venue is limited capacity and will be presale-ONLY, so for tickets and more info, go here.

Finally, your listening homework—should you choose to accept it:

P.S. That title track is a KILLER.

P.P.S. However, do be warned this album comes with quite a lot of “buyer beware”. Holy dissonant stock sounds, Batman!
