Events to Love: As You Like It One-Year Anniversary
This is a pretty big week for (our favorite!) San Francisco’s As You Like It, having launched a brand new podcast this Tuesday, and celebrating their successful first year with an extra-special event happening this Saturday.
Following his performance at [KONTROL] last June, Guillaume and The Coutou Dumonts left quite the impression on fans of house music in this city by the bay, so it’s very exciting to see him at the top of this bill. Weaving seamlessly from soul to disco to Chicago house and even into Afrobeat, he brings an unheard-of musical depth to his sets—something for discerning listeners and dancers alike. In addition to Guillaume, the event will also feature performances from SF favorite Dave Aju, a live set from Dumb Unit recent addition, Walker Barnard, and of course, the AYLI residents—who always bring it hard. You can purchase tickets here (going quickly!—ed), and if you need some convincing to do so, definitely give the below mixes from Guillaume and Walker a listen. Finally, for more about AYLI and what’s coming next for them, check out this great article at Ibiza Voice.

Events to Love: Love Underground

Every scene has its diamond-in-the-rough DJs; the ones who are always a resident somewhere, consistently bringing new sounds to the fore, playing at skill levels rarely seen even on the international level, and who maintain their home-base following simply by performing from the heart. This event is all about hearing sets from San Francisco and Santa Cruz’s very finest of that ilk.

Featuring veteran performers Mozaic and Ivan Ruiz, and with support from Dirty Dirty Techno and the elusive Rob Monroy (Love series events), Love Underground looks to be chock full of sonic treats for fans of chilled-out house and banging techno. Lovers of dancing, this one goes until you can’t take it anymore; midnight-the bitter end. And in true underground fashion, the details on this one are sparse at best, but if you’d like to know more, contact us for further info.

Finally if that still doesn’t sound enticing enough, check out the listening homework for you below. We promise it makes a pretty convincing argument, and hope to see you on the dancefloor!

Events to Love: Forward & Public Works Present - Maceo Plex, Robag Wruhme, and Adnan Sharif

This coming Friday, May 27, the folks with Forward are bringing some very excellent house music to San Francisco’s Public Works. Featuring sets from Maceo Plex, Robag Wruhme, and Forward’s own Adnan Sharif, the night looks very promising. You can purchase tickets (for $10, plus service fee—a total steal) via Eventbrite. For more on the featured artists (and a bit of listening homework), keep reading.

Maceo Plex (aka Maetrik) has been largely unavoidable on the dancefloor following the release of this moniker’s first album, Life Index, on Crosstown Rebels in February. His ubiquitous single, “Vibe Your Love”, has landed on so many mixes and DJ charts it borders on absurd, but it’s praise that comes very well-earned. Below you’ll find a preview of his album as well as his most recent (and mind-blowingly good) mix for Crosstown Rebels.

Robag Wruhme (aka Gabor Schablitzki) has been a consistent player in the push for bringing beautifully-crafted house and techno to a wide audience. His most recent album, Thora Vukk, has received high praise from well beyond just the electronic music community—and of course is quite the favorite around these parts. You can read more about his album here, and be sure to check out his most recent mix out on Kompakt, titled Wuppdeckmischmampflow, which you can purchase via Beatport. And if you’re still craving a brief preview, check out his track, “Pnom Gobal” below.

Traxx at AYLI: A Tale of Four Cities

Traxx at AYLI: A Tale of Four Cities 01.22.11 by As You Like It

This pretty much blew my mind the first time around, so I’m very excited to share this mix by Traxx (Chicago) from As You Like It: A Tale of Four Cities in San Francisco last weekend.

I’m also really excited that, for the very first time next month, As You Like It will be coming to a much larger venue, The Public Works, with Ben Klock. Really.

Color me excited.

Nexus | Not Our First Rodeo

Nexus is going to be doing a rodeo in Half Moon Bay on Saturday, November 6. By “rodeo”, I mean something that goes like:

Howdy folks! Strap on your spurs and hop in a cow suit; cuz it’s time to rodeo! We are constructing an 80 ft straw bale amphitheatre and dropping the Funktion One Dance Stacks in 4-way surround for what will be the most incredible sound you have ever experienced. In addition we believe a biomechanical bull will be in order, a flame thrower shooting gallery had better be there, barrel racing (you in the barrel, race down the hill), a mud wrestling pit, and a bunch of other weird rodeo related antics should add that touch of Nexus flavor that we all have come to appreciate so much over the years.

Also, clowns vs. cows.

More at the above link. :)
