Mix of the Moment: tobias. Live at Berghain 9.7.11

Just in time for the weekend comes this bit of hard, dark techno from Tobias Freund’s latest incarnation, tobias. Taken from the release party for his album, Leaning Over Backwards (Ostgut Ton), that took place at Berghain last month, this is a deeply gratifying set that jacks hard, but still retains that body-moving tight balance between tension and release that has become so characteristic of the Berlin-based sound. Throughout his performance, tobias. treats his album as a show piece, creating one of the best recent examples of a truly aurally immersive dancefloor experience. We’re now very much looking forward to the moment this man gets an opportunity to wow audiences stateside. You can listen to/ download his mix below.

Legowelt Releases Free Album | ‘The TEAC Life’

Though it is not always apparent, like every other form of music, techno has its purists and its innovators; its lovers of analog and its pushers of digital. As an artist who emerged right as the transition between these two schools of thought really began to take hold, Legowelt is one of the most prolific of the last standing proponents of true “old school” aesthetic, and he wants you to know there is a difference. So, earlier this week, the man gave us all a gem, a new free album, called The TEAC Life, which you can grab directly from his site. He says about this latest effort:

Its got a hella lot deep tape saturated forest-techno tracks on it and when I say Techno i dont mean that boooooooooooring contemporary shit they call techno nowadays …

F*ck that, I am talking about: Raw as fuck autistic Star Trek 1987- Misty Forests- X-FILES,- DETROIT unicorn futurism made on cheap ass digital & analog crap synthesizers recorded in a ragtag bedroom studio on a TEAC VHX cassettedeck in DOLBY C with an unintelligible yet soulfull vivacity.

But of course, if you like what you hear, do throw him a few bones so at the very least, he can repair his Juno 106 and do it all over again. It’s only fair when it sounds this good.

Events to Love: As You Like It One-Year Anniversary
This is a pretty big week for (our favorite!) San Francisco’s As You Like It, having launched a brand new podcast this Tuesday, and celebrating their successful first year with an extra-special event happening this Saturday.
Following his performance at [KONTROL] last June, Guillaume and The Coutou Dumonts left quite the impression on fans of house music in this city by the bay, so it’s very exciting to see him at the top of this bill. Weaving seamlessly from soul to disco to Chicago house and even into Afrobeat, he brings an unheard-of musical depth to his sets—something for discerning listeners and dancers alike. In addition to Guillaume, the event will also feature performances from SF favorite Dave Aju, a live set from Dumb Unit recent addition, Walker Barnard, and of course, the AYLI residents—who always bring it hard. You can purchase tickets here (going quickly!—ed), and if you need some convincing to do so, definitely give the below mixes from Guillaume and Walker a listen. Finally, for more about AYLI and what’s coming next for them, check out this great article at Ibiza Voice.

Regis | ‘In A Syrian Tongue’ EP

Straight out of Sandwell District’s camp comes a new EP from Regis on brand new London label Blackest Ever Black. You can already preorder copies of this one via Boomkat, and if you’re a sucker for cool album art, it’s best to hurry, as the first 500 copies come in the picture sleeve you see above.

Hard, dark techno doesn’t get much more fierce than Regis, and on this release he certainly doesn’t pull any punches. Everything here is blistering in its tone and tempo; just the right pace for the 4am crowd as it sets itself on going until morning. Very excited to hear this one hit dancefloors soon!

Skudge | ‘First Observation’ EP

Stockholm-based Skudge bring it hard this week, with some some dark, danceable dub techno on their First Observation EP, out now on Echocord Colour. Following the 2010 inception of their own imprint, Skudge Records, the duo has built up quite the cadre of devoted followers, and seeing their work on some a more widely-recognized imprint (following their dropping some outright quality on their own) is well deserved acknowledgement, indeed. Both the A and B-sides of this one are bang on for Echocord Color’s aesthetic, with the reigning themes of hard and dark—but still with a skank—very much in the right place. The added remix by Conforce of the B-side “Void” is to some degree an out of place element, but only in that it belongs more in the headphones or after hours than on the dancefloor. You can give all three tracks a listen below—these ones are highly recommended for the crate. (Physical copies are available here and here, with digital here and here.)
