Events to Love: As You Like It One-Year Anniversary
This is a pretty big week for (our favorite!) San Francisco’s As You Like It, having launched a brand new podcast this Tuesday, and celebrating their successful first year with an extra-special event happening this Saturday.
Following his performance at [KONTROL] last June, Guillaume and The Coutou Dumonts left quite the impression on fans of house music in this city by the bay, so it’s very exciting to see him at the top of this bill. Weaving seamlessly from soul to disco to Chicago house and even into Afrobeat, he brings an unheard-of musical depth to his sets—something for discerning listeners and dancers alike. In addition to Guillaume, the event will also feature performances from SF favorite Dave Aju, a live set from Dumb Unit recent addition, Walker Barnard, and of course, the AYLI residents—who always bring it hard. You can purchase tickets here (going quickly!—ed), and if you need some convincing to do so, definitely give the below mixes from Guillaume and Walker a listen. Finally, for more about AYLI and what’s coming next for them, check out this great article at Ibiza Voice.

Mix of the Moment: Com Truise at Movement 2011

The fine folks with the Red Bull Music Academy had the pleasure of hosting Com Truise on their stage this year at Movement 2011, and the man definitely showed up for it. For those of you who made it (still jealous—ed.), relive the magic. For the the rest of us, expect lo-fi at its most stylin’, so plug in.

For the lover of Acid (Acid House, Acid Techno, and pretty much all its derivatives), the properly-executed hardware set is the holy grail of performance experiences. It’s watching an act who has emptied the near-entire contents of his studio onto a stage in order to create something entirely new for the present audience—using only his bare hands. But seriously. All dramatics aside, dance music and improvisation rarely meet in a live context, making this particular mix, by the SF Bay/ Santa Cruz duo, Antacid, such a special treat. If you haven’t ever heard Acid done right before, this is an excellent introduction to the genre. Lovers of Ceephax and Bang Face especially, this one’s right up your alley.

In the meantime, you can catch their next performance on June 16, when they’ll be opening for Luke Vibert at San Francisco’s Public Works. For more info about that event, go here.

Going to Communikey

Today I’m leaving to go to Boulder, CO for the Communikey Festival. Am I excited? Very much so.
I’ve the very good fortune to be traveling with my friends Antacid, who will be performing live at Saturday night’s event, All Night Long, along with Spacetime Continuum with Cheap and Deep, Levon Vincent, and John Templeton.
Meanwhile, the rest of the festival lineup looks equally excellent, and the program guide is well worth a perusal if you live in the Boulder area and are interested in sound design workshops, interesting films, beautiful interactive art, and fun electronic music.

Got to see these guys tear Halloween weekend a new one in San Francisco. Mothership has basically made 2010 an amazing year for techno.

Seeing your homies tear a room up with a live set = GOLD.
Many thanks to @housemonkey for catching this one.
