Events to Love: As You Like It One-Year Anniversary
This is a pretty big week for (our favorite!) San Francisco’s As You Like It, having launched a brand new podcast this Tuesday, and celebrating their successful first year with an extra-special event happening this Saturday.
Following his performance at [KONTROL] last June, Guillaume and The Coutou Dumonts left quite the impression on fans of house music in this city by the bay, so it’s very exciting to see him at the top of this bill. Weaving seamlessly from soul to disco to Chicago house and even into Afrobeat, he brings an unheard-of musical depth to his sets—something for discerning listeners and dancers alike. In addition to Guillaume, the event will also feature performances from SF favorite Dave Aju, a live set from Dumb Unit recent addition, Walker Barnard, and of course, the AYLI residents—who always bring it hard. You can purchase tickets here (going quickly!—ed), and if you need some convincing to do so, definitely give the below mixes from Guillaume and Walker a listen. Finally, for more about AYLI and what’s coming next for them, check out this great article at Ibiza Voice.

The latest track from Maceo Plex (aka Maetrik) is an absolute killer—definitely another notch in the belt for this moniker from the veteran DJ and producer. Titled “Falling”, it’s out on the latest comp from Visionquest, which is currently exclusively available at Beatport. Having gotten the opportunity to hear this one on some decent sound over the weekend, we can say for sure this is one very vinyl-worthy, as long as you’re willing to wait. And to be fair, though Maceo blows this whole release out of the water, the whole thing is worth its due; Tale Of Us brings us “Winds Of Change”, a moody analog piece with heavily filtered vocals (lovers of Art Department will especially dig this one) and San Francisco’s own Pillow Talk drops a slow, soulful disco-nouveau/ early 90’s house throwback with “Love Makes Parks”. Basically, there’s a little something for just about every flavor of house music fan to love in this one.

Danny Daze dips into the recent releases off of Hot Natured, Visionquest, Leftroom, and Crosstown Rebels for an incredibly sexy sounding house mix. It definitely just got hot in here.

Mix of the Moment: Slash Dot Dash Podcast 006: Kenneth Christiansen

Over the weekend, Slash Dot Dash released the sixth installment of their podcast series, featuring a three hour dub techno mix from Echocord and Pattern Repeat label boss Kenneth Christiansen. If you’ve been convinced at this point that dub techno is boring, this is a mix you need to hear, because it is quite seriously faith-restoringly good (and how it’s done, to be honest—ed). Rather than a mix that drives on forever toward nowhere, here you’ll hear all the things the more boring contributors to the genre left us to believe were verboten: creamy synths, warm soundscapes, catchy hooks, and danceable beats, even. Christiansen goes out of his way to keep things interesting by doing what every DJ ought: he takes his banner genre and forces it to its very edge in every direction possible. This is an excellent introduction, a brilliant refresher, and for those of us who drank the kool-aid and never looked back, a whole lot of told ya so.

Mix of the Moment: Emperor Machine on Beats In Space

Tim Sweeny’s weekly radio show, Beats In Space (WNYU 89.1 FM New York), hosted DC Recordings’ own The Emperor Machine this past Wednesday, and the resulting mix is one hell of a lot of funky and psychedelic electronic sounds for just one hour’s time. If you’ve never heard him before, this may make for a very interesting introduction, as most of the tracks he includes are his own unreleased edits and remixes. Even more interesting is that we get to hear not only a couple of cuts from his forthcoming and as-of-yet-not-really-announced album, but the final track is even something he’s crediting with his real name, Andy Meecham—at least so far. You can download the mix here, or check out the rest of the details for this installment (including the track listing) here.

Mix of the Moment: Claude VonStroke on Rinse FM!

This past Monday, San Francisco’s own Claude VonStroke stopped by the Rinse FM studios, and threw down a two-hour monster set. To say it’s weird to hear the man shouting out to the City on a British radio show is a gross understatement, but boy does it feel good to know he’s getting to show ‘em what we’ve been screaming about on this end of the world for so damn long. As usual, expect some serious day-party-friendly sauce in this one—sunnies on, kids!

Download/ listen here.

Claude VonStroke is currently on his Makeovers tour—peep the dates here, ‘cause you don’t want to miss a bit of Dirtybird coming at you!
