Out Today/ Tomorrow: Martyn | ‘Ghost People’

You can now hear an an exclusive stream of the new album from Martyn, Ghost People, via the good folks with Mixmag. This is Martyn’s first full-length foray out of the world of his own label, 3024, finding the producer on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint.

As is to be expected, these tracks pretty clearly straddle that ever-dissolving line between the worlds of dubstep and techno (and even house, in this case), and sound like someone’s been listening to a lot of old school Detroit techno in the last year. As it is, there’s very little Martyn makes that doesn’t sound clearly derivative, but he does so with such skill that it would be hard to fault him for making his influences plain. This isn’t a stale-out-of-the-box throwback, but rather an incredibly refreshing rehashing of some crowd favorites that are very dancefloor-friendly.

The album is out today and tomorrow, October 10/11, depending on where you live, and is already available via Bleep (who’ve written a particularly interesting review of the album). Meanwhile, you can preview the entire release below.

Adult Swim | ‘[Unclassified]’
It’s been three years since Adult Swim dropped the Ghostly Swim compilation in conjunction with Ghostly International, so it’s been only a matter of time before they would bless us with another comp of stellar tunes. Earlier this week, they released the free-to-download [Unclassified], which features tracks from most of the more long-standing movers in bass music (is that the least contentious name at this point?—ed). As is to be expected, there are works from Burial, Zomby, Kode 9, Ikonika, SBTRKT, and, the list goes on, really. Standing at the top of a pile of familiar names, however, is relative unknown Dauwd with the dubby and bright “Ikopol”, built for lovers of a properly-executed slow jam at house tempo with a footwork-style beat. In other words, hot. Check it out below.
Meanwhile, you can grab the entirety of [Unclassified]—for free—directly from Adult Swim.

The latest remixes from Julio Bashmore are sounding pretty excellent right about now (and yes, despite how they’ve been named, they are brand spanking new). The man lays hands on Deadboy’s banger from back in 2009, “Heartbreaker” for Brighton-based label Housing Project (a sub-label of Well Rounded). The “2009 Mix” finds Julio giving the original the footwork treatment, while the “2010 Mix” pushes the tune into some proper house territory, with both sounding tempting, indeed. You’ll be able to find this one out on October 3/4.

P.S. For those of you who are curious, peep the original track from Deadboy below.

At this point in time, it’s pretty fair to say that Om Unit has the Midas touch, so hearing that he’s got an upcoming release with Kromestar on brand new label Cosmic Bridge Records is incredibly exciting. With so many solo-man efforts in the dubstep/ post-dubstep world, it’s outstanding to see this push back toward collaborative works from two producers who have made it known that there is nothing static in music. We could very well begin the arduous process of discussing the evolution of genre right here in fact, as this is the place where the definitions become the most unclear, and the music the most exciting. Keep it up, sirs.

Events to Love: Fixup - Comma ‘Colortronics’ Release Party

This Thursday in San Francisco is officially going to be poppin’, so you may as well just plan on calling in sick on Friday, especially if you’re a bass head. 222 Hyde is hosting the final edition of Fixup, which will also be a very special release party for Comma’s Colortronics EP. (And if you haven’t already grabbed this one, you really should—you can even get a copy on a purple cassette tape!) Featuring support from DJG (Surefire), Epcot (Frite Nite), Fixup’s own Psych Tyson, and a special guest (we have our theories), this night looks set to own. Purchase tickets here—this space has very limited capacity.

And as an aside, if you were also looking forward to seeing Luke Vibert at Public Works that same night, the news looks not so good. Unfortunately his visa was delayed, and the event has been postponed. If you purchased a ticket, expect to see a refund shortly.

2562 Tonight in Santa Cruz, CA

My friends and extended musical family never seem to fail in impressing me. Tonight, because one of the brightest crayons in the box took a chance on a rare opportunity, I get to see one of my greatest musical heroes and influences of the past few years, 2562, in one of the most intimate settings ever. To say I’m grateful would be a gross understatement; things like this don’t happen without raw talent at your side.

If you’re in Santa Cruz (or interested in driving down/up) and want further info about this event, go here. Meanwhile, see you on the dancefloor tonight!

Fuck it. I’m just gonna say at least I knew I was going to eat my hat on this one. I even talked a wee bit of jive for a second there, ‘cause the original album is perfect as it is. However, I love being proven completely wrong by music this beautiful.
